MidWest Hatters is a small business specialising in handmade hats for men and women.

My name is Barbara Larkin and I am the sole proprietor of MidWest Hatters which is based in my attic home studio in the MidWest of Western Australia. I have been making hats on a part-time basis for over 20 years and trained in Caussade, France and Canberra, Australia. In 2017, I moved back to the MidWest, 'bit the bullet' and started my millinery business.  

 What makes my hats different? 

It's about choice. Choice to be who you want to be. This website offers a range of brands, each specialising in a different look, be it elegant/ classic, casual or quirky. Available brands include Derby Hats Australia, MidWest Hatters and Hats for Tarts.

1) Derby Hats Australia (Women's Hats and Fascinators).

These unique pieces are hand blocked and sewn and suitable for a range of events including horse races, church services and weddings. I would describe this style as 'simply elegant'.

 

2) MidWest Hatters (Fedoras and Western Hats).

These hats are suitable for men and women. They are hand blocked and both hand and machine sewn. Not your everyday 'work horse', rather a weekend 'head turner' of a hat, more suited to 'strutting your stuff'. Many hats in this collection incorporate recycled materials and are often trimmed with vintage costume jewellery, feathers or chevron headbands so each hat is unique. These hats are perfect for events such music festivals, line dancing shindigs or perhaps you just want to jazz up your favourite pair of jeans and boots. I would describe this style as 'dressy western'.

 

3) Hats for Tarts (Novelty Headpieces).

These fun pieces are hand blocked but rarely is any sewing is involved. Customers have purchased these pieces for events such as Melbourne Cup lunches, fancy dress parties, Hen's nights and milestone birthday parties. I would describe this style as 'whimiscal and fun.
